Just Energy ambiguous cancellation letter

Today (May 28th) we received, in two separate envelopes, two identical copies of the following form letter, dated May 18th:

What I don't quite understand is what "your cancellation notice" refers to in the third paragraph.  Which of the following might it be?

  1. Our "request to cancel [our] electricity supply program" from the first paragraph,
  2. This letter we are reading,
  3. A notice that will hopefully arrive in the future, or
  4. Another option I had not considered
Since this is sufficient evidence for me that they will follow their legal obligations to cancel the contract we were scammed into signing, I'm not going to bother following up with a phone call to find out.  I just thought it was worth noting their further ambiguity, and the fact that it's so easy to find yourself signed up for their service, but that cancelling such a thing is a "process" that takes an amount of time that is not at all clear.

But if it so happens that it turns out to be option C, and then the notice never arrives, or we have any further trouble with Just Energy, you'll definitely read about it here.

Hi Kevin, thank you for your post on Just Energy. I just signed their contract 2 days ago and I'm trying to cancel my account. Like you, I am having a lot of trouble. I'm also using the Waterloo North Hydro Inc. I have no idea if the account is cancelled as I just called them and they do not give any confirmation of cancellation. I still have a few days left before my [10] days is up. I noticed you went through a lot before receiving a formal notice of cancellation from JE. Should I be doing the same thing (sending registered mail, and calling them) to get the notice of cancellation as well? You input is much appreciated.

I'm glad you found it useful. Well, the thing is, I only have experience going this one route, so I'm not sure what your odds are of securing a cancellation by phone. The lack of confirmation number makes me uneasy, but the BBB doesn't inspire huge amounts of confidence either. It's ultimately up to you, of course, but if you don't go the registered mail route, I would secure some other form of proof of your request: record your phone call to them and also make a dated, written log of it somewhere, and keep it with your hydro bills. Either way, I welcome you to share how it goes here. Thanks, -K

Thanks for your response. I figured as much. Sigh, I guess I will be sending a registered mail to JE and HOPING that they send me a cancellation notice. I don't know what to do if they actually activate my account. I'm really glad I found your website. By the way, in your previous post, you said that you finally cancelled your account by the fourth call, how did you know? Was it something that the JE associate had said?

No problem, I'm glad to be able to help in some way. I guess I'd look for community legal assistance if they actually activate it, and keep all your evidence and record whatever you can that you might be able to use to show they unfairly presented things and didn't cancel despite a timely request.

About the fourth call thing, I meant that the first three calls did not result in them even telling us that they would cancel it, with or without a confirmation number (the first call, it wasn't in the system and the guy wouldn't write a post-it note and do it later; the second, a recorded message told us they were closed even though it was 1pm on a weekday and would not let us leave a message; I forget the third).

BTW we're still technically waiting for JE QA to call us back from the "will call back in 20 minutes" situation from that Saturday in early June...

Thanks Kevin! Your comments were really helpful. I'll post updates as soon as I hear from JE. I hope this helps other poor souls who got sucked into these scams.

My request for cancellation letter worked! Well, I got an official confirmation letter from JE, but it's different from the one you posted. There are less ambiguities. They stated in the letter that it is a confirmation of cancellation. They also stated that there will be no charges [which I will be checking in my next bill]. I'm glad that they sent the confirmation letter, but I'm really angry that they wouldn't cancel it over the phone [or rather lie about the cancellation over the phone]. If I hadn't sent a formal cancellation request through registered mail, I think JE would've just went and charged me anyways, and I wouldn't have known about it until I received my hydro bill. And by then, I would've been outside the time limit to cancel the contract. Anyways, I hope this helps others who are in the same situation. I'm REALLY glad I found your post and even more so that you posted about it. =D

I'm glad to hear that! It's interesting you got a different letter. Anyway I'm glad it's over for you too now, and that I could be of some help to you, that means it was worth writing it up. Thanks for sharing here too.
